Defining Moment...
First day into Seletar Camp, I was sabotaged by my group of buds from OETI. 2 to be exact. Well, they told the other friends that I can sing and have performed in OETI (my previous traininig school).
Monday 18 Dec: My Warrant Officer was looking for a person to take part in an Idol competition. As our Specialist Mess a.ka Raft is having a Grand Opening ceremony cum Annual Function D&D, they have lots of programmes on the list. I was chosen to take part. I was a little relunctant at first, but the common phrase in army context "Lan Lan Suck Thumb".
Tuesday 19 Dec: I was told last minute there is a meeting for the Raft Idol 2006. Madness! I have to rush back home at 10plus in the morning to get my song done. The first song I've chosen "Angels Brought Me Here" puts me into hesitation. I couldn't remove the vocal from the song fully. F*** it. So long as I produced a CD, I would be put to SAFE.
Wednesday 20 Dec: Didn't really sleep well as I spent quite something thinking what song should I perform. Something that would captivate audience? Something meaningful? Something within my vocal range? Something i'm familiar with, as things were so last minute...
I decided on K. Clarkson "A moment like this" as this is the song I would always sing to irritate my pals while fixing vehicles.
Thursday 21st Dec: I didn't sleep well again the previous night. Starting to feel so uncomfortable about the performance. When I went for the meeting this morning, realised all the other contestants are gonna sing Mando Pop. I do love Mandarin songs, but my Yao Zhi abit not clear at times. Heck it, I shall just continue with my "A Moment Like This". Do or dead, let fate decide.
I was the very first one to perform. Lucky boy you know, draw lots and ended up first performer. Butterflies in stomach, uncomfortable, nerve-wrecking. Still, I do my thing.
The judges said...
First Judge: "Nervous at first, but everything ended well"
Third Judge (who's a professional singer): "There's a bit of pitch problem towards the end of the song but everything ended well too. And you've personality"
Second Judges: I really can't recall what he said.
I was left in the top 2, and my colleagues and I was pretty sure I would get 1st runner up. But never did I expect I would be crowned the Raft Idol 2006. Seriously I think he sang better, but sometimes things just turned out to be wrong in life.
I'm happy. I'm glad. This is my 2nd Champion trophy after 6 years. (First one was in Secondary School Dance Competition). Plus, I received a $120 Topman Voucher. This is the so-called Defining Moment in army.
Leave starts tomorrow. I'm over the sun and over the moon!
